ITiCSE 2024 Working Group
Analysis of Data Systems Curricula

Publication

What was the plan?

Toni Taipalus and Daphne Miedema are organising a working group at the ACM conference on Innovation and Technology in Computer Science Education (ITiCSE). The idea behind a working group is to work together on a research question of interest, with both an online-asynchronous part as well as an in person collaboration colocated with the conference (in July - Milan, Italy).

This working group focused on existing data systems curricula, and comparing them to industry expectations of new grads. We looked for Data Systems teachers and others with an interest in Data Systems Education, to join us in this endeavor. You can read more about the proposed methods and schedules here and apply here before March 11, 2024.

What was the outcome?

The team produced a working group report: Data Systems Education: Curriculum Recommendations, Course Syllabi, and Industry Needs. In short, the working group report highlights that there is a significant gap between data systems topics recommended in curriculum guidelines, those taught in higher education, and the skills valued in industry. While industry places high importance on topics such as data visualization, data warehousing, and semi-structured data models, these are seldom covered in university courses, emphasizing the need for better alignment between education and industry demands.
